choice reflection
Installation, Russian Museum St Petersburg, 2011;
3 mirrored surfaces, each appr. 130 x 60 cm; glass bubbles; old keys.
I tried to express the feeling we get when we realise that our
necessity to permamently make decisions has its targets in an
unknown, “outside” world. Where suddenly reality seems to be only
a very personal construction in our mind. But the doors to this “inner”
world of representation we cannot open with a “real” key – it does
not fit. To express this I locked the keys which I found and collected
during my many travels in glass bubbles which by doing this turned
into invisible prisons. The spectator is still able to see the presence
of these keys which might open the doors but cannot reach and grasp
them. The connection between these “real” keys and the mirrored door
which represents the entrance to our inner world becomes physically
impossible and can only be established by the reflection performed by each of us.
