SILK FACTORY
Concept Description
Silk Factory is a sculptural light installation in glass and optic fibre, connecting past and future through references to textile production and industrial design.
Suspended sculptural group is a composition of glass shapes and optic fibre. Each element also has a function as a light source.
The intention of this installation is to visually connect us to the history and the purpose of the building in a conceptual and aesthetic way in order to bring historical parallels and associations to the spinning and textile production.
On a more general level we wanted to express the concept of time circulation, the constant shift between past and future, what is modern and fashionable today- outdated and old tomorrow until it becomes relevant again.
The industrial revolution of the 19th century is shifting into a strange robotic future, where the place and function of the human is unclear and hand crafted objects are taking on a new meaning and value.
The shapes of the glass elements are fantasy abstract hybrids between traditional Russian wood hand spindlers and industrial spools of thread. They are also references to the elegant geometry of the design of the 60's.
The intense graphic lines of the optic fibre connecting glass forms, physically and conceptually in one composition, which can be seen from different levels of the room.
Glass is a material which is on the border between the existing and non existing - the visible and invisible. We choose this material also because it plays beautifully with the contrasting texture of the old brick walls. It works visually as well as conceptually, and not least, it has the function of delivering more light to the space.
